COVID-19 Preparedness & Response Plan

07.14.21

The following COVID-19 preparedness & response plan has been established by Open Doors Kalamazoo in accordance with MIOSHA Emergency Rules for Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The purpose of this plan is to minimize or eliminate employee exposure to SARS-CoV-2.

The Emergency Rules have general safeguards applicable for all workplaces and specific safeguards for certain industries. The Deputy Director has read these emergency rules carefully, developed the safeguards appropriate to Open Doors Kalamazoo based on its type of business or operation, and has incorporated those safeguards into this COVID-19 preparedness and response plan.

Open Doors Kalamazoo has designated one or more worksites supervisors to implement, monitor, and report on the COVID-19 control strategies developed in this plan. The worksite supervisors are the Deputy Director, the Lead Shelter Manager, the Facilities Manager, and the Community Program Director. The supervisors will remain on-site at all times when employees are present on site or an on-site employee will be designated as a COVID-19 Safety Officer to perform the supervisory role if a worksite supervisor is not able to be present. The plan will be made readily available to our employees and their representatives.

The plan will be made readily available to our employees and their representatives. The plan will be available via google drive for all staff, and the website (www.opendoorskalamazoo.org) for the general public.

Yoga and Recovery

11.30.20

The COVID-19 pandemic has created difficult circumstances for those recovering from substance use illnesses. However, thanks to Bent 9 Hot Yoga, some people are using exercise and wellness to cope with our newfound quarantine “way of life.”

Meet Hayden, a very special member of our family at the Next Door Shelter who, after 10 years of substance use illness, recently celebrated 100 days of sobriety after turning to yoga, fitness and healthy eating for comfort.

“I was homeless, I was broke, I was destroyed,” Smith said. “I lived on the streets for ten years, I was in and out of jail, on probation, and in the peek of my addiction. … When I was at rock bottom I found yoga and got completely addicted to it. Drugs and alcohol were the solutions to all my problems in life and now I use yoga and fitness as that purpose.”

“You have nothing to lose if you are already in active addiction,” Hanson said. “Come give it a try. Learn from me, someone who is in recovery and found that hope through yoga.”

Hayden, we love you and we are so proud of all that you have accomplished! We are thankful that your life’s journey brought you to us and made you apart of the Open Doors family. We will continue to support you moving forward!
